Research

I direct the Document and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (dprl). Currently in the dprl we are focused on Mathematical Information Retrieval, and the MMLI project (chemical informatics). Demo systems (e.g., MathDeck and ChemScraper) and details about these and other projects can be found below.

Before joining RIT, I was an NSERC postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence in Montreal (CENPARMI). While in graduate school, I was a member of both the Diagram Recognition and Medical Computing labs at Queen's University (Canada), worked part-time at Legasys Corporation (a legacy software solution company), and completed a summer research internship at the Xerox Research Center Webster (Rochester, NY).

In addition to chairing and serving on program committees for conferences in document recognition and information retrieval, I am on the Editorial Boards for the Pattern Recognition journal and the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR). I will be a Competitions Co-Chair for the International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2024), and was the IAPR TC-11 (Reading Systems) Communications Officer for 2017-2018.
