Week 17

Week 16
- Posters are due Sunday Dec. 11th at 11:59pm through the MyCourses dropbox.
- Poster Session next week: Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 10am-12pm. Session will be in the GCCIS auditorium.
- Posters and projects need to be submitted online here by Monday, Dec. 12 by noon. Click on 'Project submissions can be made here,' and follow the instructions - see Prof. Bischof's email for additional details. Note: your advisor may allow you to submit your final report and other deliverables later than this - I will need their grade by the Monday after exam week (Dec. 19th).
Week 15
- Poster Session has a new time: Tuesday, Dec. 13th from 10am-noon. The session will be held in the GCCIS auditorium.
- Posters are due Sunday Dec. 11th at 11:59pm through the MyCourses dropbox. Reports will be due a bit later in the week to your advisor, and will also be posted online along with your poster .pdf file. I will require your advisor's grades for all milestones and final deliverables (report, etc.) by Monday after exam week (Dec. 19th).
- Milestone 3 materials should now be with your advisor for evaluation.
Week 13
- There will be a quiz on Ch. 16 at the beginning of class.
- There will be no class next week. Have a nice holiday.
- Homework: Prepare a first draft of your poster as a .pdf file (as an A1-sized document - see the syllabus). We will present these in-class on Monday in Week 14 (i.e., the week after the Thanksgiving break).
Week 12
- Milestone 3 presentations will be given in-class on Monday.
- Homework: Read Ch. 16 of the Zobel text before class. For related comments on giving academic talks for defenses, please see this document. We will have a quiz at the start of class next week, and then start discussing how to prepare and present your posters.
Week 11
- We will have Milestone 3 presentations in class on Monday. Requirements are the same as given for Week 2 below.
- Milestone 3 is due at the end of next week (Wk 12) - please talk to your advisor regarding expected deliverables.
- In Week 13, we will start working on preparing our posters. Read Ch. 16 of the Zobel text before class that week. For related comments on giving academic talks for defenses, please see this document.
Week 10
- Homework for the week is due on Friday, Oct. 28th. Submit your .pdf for answers to the questions send via email through the MyCourses dropbox.
- We will meet Monday of Week 11 at 10am in the DPRL (Oct. 31st - Halloween!).
Week 9
- We will meet Monday at 10am in the DPRL lab.
- Milestone 2 is now due - please submit your materials to your advisor.
- Assigned Reading: Chs. 6 and 13 of Zobel, on style and editing. There will be a quiz in-class.
Week 8
- Note Schedule Change: To avoid confusions on "Muesday" after the holiday Monday, we will have class on Thursday from 11-12:15pm in the DPRL lab. We will discuss experimental designs for your projects in-class.
- Milestone 2 will be due at the end of this week (Oct. 14th).
- The final poster session has been confirmed for Wednesday, Dec. 14th from 1-3pm in the GCCIS Atrium.
Week 7
- We will have Milestone 2 presentations in class on Monday. Requirements are the same as for Week 2 (see below).
- Next week we will have in-class discussion and exercises related to math, algorithms, and/or experimental design.
Week 6
- There will be a quiz in-class (on Chs. 14+15)
- Homework for Wk. 7: prepare a 10 minute presentation (not counting questions), summarizing your progress on Milestone II. The talk requirements are the same as listed in the notes for Week 2 below, except you will focus on the current milestone. Submit your slides before the start of class on Monday morning.
Week 5
- Class has been permanently moved to Mondays at 10-11:15am.
- There will be a quiz on the assigned reading during class (Chs. 9 + 10 of Zobel).
- Revised project abstracts should be submitted before the start of class Monday.
- Milestone 1 deliverables should now be in to your advisor.
- Hwk for Wk. 6: read Chs. 14-15 on experimentation and statistics.
Week 4
- This week's class will be held Monday at 10am in GOL-3500 (DPRL lab).
- Homework (for Wk5): Read Chs. 9 and 10 in Zobel on math and algorithms before class, and submit your revised abstract (1 paragraph) summarizing your project through the MyCourses dropbox before class on Monday.
- Milestone 1 deliverables are due to your advisor at the end of this week (specific deadline to be worked out with your advisor).
Week 3
- Submit your presentation slides as a .pdf file through MyCourses before the start of class.
- Next Week: We will complete some in-class writing exercises next week (no homework for Week 4).
Week 2
- Homework: on MyCourses, under 'Homework' for Week 1 you will find a form for outlining the final deliverables and milestones for your project (e.g., using bulleted lists and short comments). This form is provided in .docx, .pdf and .pages formats - you may use whatever you like. Submit the completed form through the dropbox in MyCourses as a .pdf file.
- There will be a quiz in-class on the assigned reading (see the Schedule link above).
- For next week (Wk3), prepare a 10 minute presentation (maximum, including questions). Submit your slides through the dropbox in MyCourses. The presentation will be graded out of 10, based equally on the clarity and content. Presentations should be clear, correct, and contain technical information appropriate for the class (your audience). For full marks, the presentation must contain the following:
- A title slide, giving the project name, advisor and your name.
- A summary of the goals and deliverables for Milestone 1.
- A summary of progress to date.
- A discussion of what the most important task to address next is, how you will address it, and a list of possibly helpful resources or tools.
Week 1
- Note: This class will meet once a week only, on Thursdays at 11am-12:15pm.
- Read the course text (Zobel) Chs. 1-3 before the first class on Thursday.
- You must secure a project advisor and topic by Friday to remain registered for the project. The "Resources" link above provides a link to available projects, and projects completed earlier this year.
