News

Week 15

  • A discussion thread has been set up on MyCourses for people to share and discuss training queries for Project 3.
  • Office Hours: Prof. Zanibbi will hold office hours during the first week of exams (Dec. 9th - Dec. 13th): Mon Dec. 9th 1pm-3pm; Tues-Fri 10am-12pm.
  • Due this Friday: Assignment 5 is due at 5pm, along with 5 training queries for Project 3. The Google Drive link for uploading training queries is available through MyCourses (under Deliverables -> Projects -> Project3) - please check the README for instructions on what to upload, so that we have a set of training queries that can be easily used by all groups.
  • Project 3: there will be presentations during our 'exam' from 1:30-4pm on Dec. 13th (in our regular classroom). The final project submission is due Monday, Dec. 16th at 5pm. Please see the project write-up for details.
  • The final tutorial will be given this Friday, which will focus on Project 3. The TA (Behrooz) has kindly agreed to be available by email during the exam period if you have questions for him. 
  • Please complete the course evaluation if you have not had a chance to do so already. I'd greatly appreciate your feedback on what worked and what can be improved in future offerings of the course. This closes Dec. 10th, so please complete this soon.

Week 14

  • Deadline Extension: Project 2 is due Tuesday Nov. 26 at 11:59pm.
  • Two Research Papers will be discussed in-class on Tuesday this week. See MyCourses for deliverables and expectations. Another pair of research papers will also be discussed on Tuesday next week. 
    This Tuesday (Wk 14): Groups 1, 3, 5: Kanapala Text Summarization paper; Groups 2, 4, 7: Xie 'why do people search for images' paper.

Week 13

  • Design presentations for Project 2 will be given in-class this Thursday.
  • Project 2 is due Sunday night at 11:59pm.
  • Reading: We will finish Ch. 7 on Tuesday, and will touch on topics from Chs. 9 and 10 in the remaining lectures.
  • Research Papers: Research papers for panel discussion next Tuesday will be out later this week, along with criteria for preparation and the discussion in-class. Each paper discussion will last 20 minutes.
  • Project 3 and Assignment 5 will be released next week.

Week 12

  • Deadline Extensions: Assignment 4 is now due Thursday at midnight. Project 2 is now due Sunday, Nov. 24th at 11:59pm.
  • The key for A3 will be released early this week, and grades for Project 1 will be completed ASAP.

Week 11

  • Reading: Ch. 7 of Croft
  • Prof. Zanibbi's office hours are cancelled on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Assignment 4 will be due next Tuesday at 5pm.
  • Project 2 will be due in Week 13 (Friday, Nov. 22nd). Presentations for the project will be given one day before, in-class.

Week 10

  • There will be no tutorial this Friday.
  • Reading: Read Croft Chs. 6 (Tuesday) and Ch. 7 (Thursday) 
  • The course schedule has been updated.
  • The key for A3 will be posted soon, along with A4 and Project 2.

Week 9

  • Project 1 presentations with be given in-class on Thursday. Presentations should be 10 minutes, including questions (so 7-8 minutes in the presentation) and summarize key details from your project (see whiteboard capture from Lecture on Tuesday on MyCourses).
  • Reading: Read Ch. 6 of Croft.

Week 8

  • Project 1 is posted on MyCourses. Student groups will present their work (10 mins each) on Thursday Oct. 24th, and submit their final write-up by Friday Oct. 25th, 5pm. 
  • If you have not already selected a Group of 2 on MyCourses for Project 1, do so before Friday morning. I have also sent an email listing which groups will work together on the uability study piece - please reach out to your partner group ASAP.
  • The key for Assignment 2 (minus the sample files/description for Q5) is available through MyCourses. The key for Assignment 3 will be available next week.
  • There will be a Tutorial this Friday@12pm. Behrooz will go over Assignment 3 and Project 1 - please attend if you can, as I expect that many of you have questions about the write-up and usability evaluation portions of the project.

Week 7

  • Extension the 2nd: Asssignment 3 is due Thursday at 5pm.

Week 6

  • Extension: Assignment 3 is now due next Tuesday (Oct. 8th) at 5pm.
  • There is no tutorial this week, as Behrooz is away presenting his research at a conference. Prof. Zanibbi will be holding regular office hours (incl. Friday from 10-11:50am)
  • Reading this week: Hearst, Ch. 2

Week 5

  • Reading this week: Croft Ch. 4 and Hearst Ch. 11
  • Assignment 3 should be ready later this week (hopefully by Friday morning), and the grading key for Assignment 2 will be available soon.

Week 4

  • For Thursday: Read Manning Chs. 1 and 2, Croft 5.3. Have a look at Croft 5.3 (on inverted indices). For next week: Read Croft Ch. 4 and Hearst Ch. 11
  • Assignment 2 is due Friday at 5pm (questions and submission through MyCourses).
  • The grading key for Assignment 1 is available in MyCourses. The assignments have been graded, and will be posted (with annotations) on Tuesday.

Week 3

  • Read Ch. 3 of Hearst, and glance over Ch. 2 before class on Thursday; for next week, Read Ch. 2 of Hearst (on evaluation of interfaces).
  • Assignment 2 will be posted by Friday morning, and will be due next Friday.
  • The grading key for Assignment 1 will be available later this week.

Week 2

  • *Assignment 1 is due Friday Sept. 6th at 5pm. The questions and submission drop-box are available through MyCourses.
  • The final exam (presentations for Project 3) will be Friday, Dec. 13th from 1:30-4pm in our regular classroom (GOL 3445). The schedule has been updated to reflect this.
  • There will be another tutorial this Friday, and please feel free to take advantage of Prof. Zanibbi and the TA (Behrooz's) office hours.
  • Read Chs. 8 in the Croft text on search result evaluation before class on Thursday. The Ch. 8 reading from Manning is an optional second resource.
  • *Read For Tuesday: Ch. 3 of the Hearst book.

Week 1

Welcome! This is the web page for the Information Retrieval course being offered in the Department of Computer Science at RIT in Fall 2019. Here is a brief summary of available information, and what to expect for this course.
  • The course syllabus is available. The schedule will be completed soon.
  • The first assignment is available through MyCourses, and is due next Friday (Sept. 6th) at 5pm. The assignment will be discussed at the tutorial tomorrow (Friday) at 12pm in GOL 3560.
  • Reading: complete the assigned readings for Wks 1 and 2 before class on Tuesday (readings are listed in the course schedule).
  • Readings will be available through MyCourses; there will not be a course textbook.
  • The course will include assigned readings, assignments, and (team) projects. You will be expected to analyze (e.g., when 'math-ing'), program/test/document, and read and write thoughtfully for this course. You will also be reading and sometimes discussing IR research papers in class. 
  • Office Hours: The instructor's office hours will be the 1/2 hour after each class, and Friday mornings from 10am-12pm. There will also be a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the course. The TA will hold weekly tutorial sessions, as well as office hours each week.
