ABSTRACT

This presentation will cover the terminology used in High Performance Networking, such as vBNS, NGI, and Internet2, and the reality and potential of the national and international advanced networks. It will highlight current University of Iowa applications, including "tele-immersive" applications through networked ImmersaDesks (drafting-table-style virtual reality systems).

About the Speaker

Judith R. Brown is the manager of Advanced Research Computing and Visualization in Information Technology Services, The University of Iowa. She previously taught mathematics and computer graphics. She has co-authored four books on computer graphics, visualization, and user interface, and she is a frequently-invited speaker on topics in computer graphics education, visualization, and collaboration. As University of Iowa Internet2 project manager, she consults with faculty and staff on access to the vBNS, very high performance Backbone Network Service, and potential Internet2 applications. She is Chair of the SIGGRAPH 30th Year Celebration activities this year and a candidate for SIGGRAPH Chair. She is a Eurographics Fellow and an Honorable Member of the Academic Committee of the State Key Lab of CAD & Computer Graphics at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.
