Emotional Empathy and Facial Mimicry of Avatar Faces

Studying Online learnersFacial mimicry is the tendency to imitate the emotional facial ex- pressions of others, a common trait that is intuitively exhibited by humans. We explored the extent to which empathetic reac- tions were elicited when subjects viewed 3D avatar faces guided by motion-captured movements compared to when viewing human faces. Through a remote study, we captured subjectsÕ facial reactions to viewing avatar and humans faces exhibiting a number of emo- tional expressions and used a questionnaire in order to determine empathy. Avatar faces varied with respect to gender and degree of realism in order to test the effects of these parameters.
