Roughly a century ago, Whitehead and Russell set out to axiomize the fundamentals of mathematics by formal logic, resulting in the publication of the Principia Mathematica. I asked a few math professors in my college days whether or not this was considered successful and got mixed responses. What is the current consensus of the mathematical community? If Whitehead and Russell are considered unsuccessful, then what are the major technical reasons why?
