Division by $0$

I've always been inclined to believe that x/0 = NaN is a placeholder for a character or constant that no one has created yet.

I know assume that none of you can tell the future, but is there an expectation that someone will eventually (successfully) define division by zero?

"NaN": there, I just created it. The real question is not to "define" division by zero, but to define it in a way that makes the result useful.2012-05-13

It already has been, when it is a useful concept. For example, as the [point at infinity](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_at_infinity) in the real projective plane or in the extended complex plane. But one still has to be careful because it does not obey all the laws of arithmetic for finite numbers. One has to take care when making such exceptions!2012-05-13

There is an [algebraic structure called a wheel](http://math.stackexchange.com/a/127704/264) where division by 0 is perfectly well-defined.2012-05-13

I suspect these appeals to abstract algebra are not what OP had in mind.2012-05-13

@AustinMohr Why not? I think that the OP has heard about definition of irrational and imaginary numbers.2012-05-13

I can prove it through the generalization of the definition of what either Arithmetic, Mathematics or any field of Mathematics defines is, if people are willing to forget what they have learned already and begin with where I start out in the proof. Now there are already many common equations and definitions that are already true in what we know and they will be included in the proof as understood. One has to change their perspective of the actual definition of and the performing of math is in order to understand my proof.2017-03-20
