I am trying to write a hook for vectors on a linear algebra course. Does anyone have an opening hook for a section on vectors that will have a real impact on students?

0Well, if it's a book for *your* students, you might try something like "In the present book we're going to treat stuff you better know 100% or else you'll flunk my class!" I bet this will really hook them in! If it is a general book you might try to open with some nice problems (linear systems/linear programation, some easy probability stuff with some easy stochastic matrix, etc.) and show how can these problems be attacked with methods of lin. alg. – 2012-05-31
