There is a relation between the tangent to a curve of a function and the first derivative of that function. However, how do I show that connection? How can you explain it to someone so that it becomes clear and understandable?

3You should check out the wikipedia entry for derivative. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative. Figures 1-3 are particularly illuminating. – 2011-06-14

0Perhaps [this](http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/12287/approaching-to-zero-but-not-equal-to-zero-then-why-do-the-points-get-overlapped/12290#12290) might help. Especially from the paragraph that begins "Now, does the line joining $A$ and $B$ have a slope that *really* approaches the slope of the tangent?" – 2011-06-14
