Each section is split into two groups, A and B. Students will learn their group in the first week of the term and must adhere to their group's schedule for the entire quarter.
Each week consists of three scheduled days of classes; let's call them FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD.
Regardless of group, a student's FIRST day is the 2 hour lecture with the Lecture Instructor. For one group, the SECOND day is a lab, and the THIRD day is a recitation. For the other group, the SECOND and THIRD days are reversed.
For example, here is how it works prior to the midterm:
On the SECOND day, Group A students have a lab, while Group B has recitation. For the first hour group A meets in the scheduled classroom doing group exercises with pen/paper, and group B has the first hour off.
For the second hour, group A meets in the lab for the individual lab component, while group B students have a recitation session with the Teaching Assistant in the lecture classroom.
On the THIRD day, Group B students have a lab, while Group A has recitation. For the first hour group B meets in the scheduled classroom doing group exercises with pen/paper, and group A has the first hour off.
For the second hour, group B meets in the lab for the individual lab component, while group A students have a recitation session with the Teaching Assistant in the lecture classroom.
*** After the midterm, the SECOND and THIRD day pattern for Group A and Group B switches. ***
