Dr. Trudy Howles
Project Information for MS Students

My interests include several areas; projects across these areas are of special interest to me:

  • Data management, especially data mining, data quality and security/safety issues. Specifically, I'm interested in alternative, more efficient data mining algorithms. Also of particular interest are projects involving large data repositories ("Big Data") leveraging currently available tools. Also, text mining, including opinion and sentiment mining.
  • I will also consider projects involve secure software. The Department of Homeland Security has a lot of good resources - google for "Build Security In" keywords.

Be warned that I'm fussy about English grammar and spelling. Before you submit anything, be sure you have carefully edited and proofed your work.

I prefer APA for citations, but will accept others so long as you are complete and consistent.

All proposals and final papers submitted to me will be processed through a plagiarism checker -- so don't even think about it!

You should stop in my office and talk with me before you do anything. When you submit a pre-proposal (aka an "idea" paper), you must also provide me with paper copies of the sources you reference in your paper.

I require this information so we can determine that the work you are proposing has not already been done, and is worthy of a MS project. In general, publications must be peer reviewed and recent (within 2 years).
