Sam Waters, Computer Science

Looks like you've found me. I'm Sam Waters, one of the SysAdmins for the Computer Science dept. at RIT, along with Jim Craig (a.k.a. Linus). I'm kind of a jack-of-all-trades....Linus is the Solaris God, and I'm the guy you come to for just about everything else.

Just a couple of thoughts/info for folks:

--If you need me to take care of something, try and give me as much advanced notice as possible, and give me a date/time when you need it completed by. As much as I'd like to handle every request immediately, it's not always possible, so I have to prioritize. The more info I have, the easier this is for me, and the more effective I can be at handling all the requests.

--I'm now going to try and set aside Fridays to take care of less time-intensive tasks, such as paperwork, cd requests, and MSDNAA administration. This is also a good time to find me in my office, rather than running all over the building.

--Finally, I'm working on a web site for general security information, with a focus (but not limited to) Windows machines. Keep an eye out for this to be added soon, and as usual, suggestions are appreciated.

I'll be adding to the site over time, but for now, all you get is links to a few important sites:

Windows Printer Install Howto-a how-to for faculty to set up CS printers from Windows
Security How-to- basic steps for keeping your machine clean and up to RIT standards
SSH FAQ-how to set up and use SSH
MSDNAA downloads- CS students and faculty can download MS products here, free of charge. Email me if you need to be registered.
CS Dept FAQs- a number of FAQs regarding various CS systems
PuTTY download -free self-contained SSH client
WinSCP-a free SCP/SFTP client. Download "application" instead of "installation package" for the self-contained version
Gibson Research DDOS attack-fascinating account of a DDOS attack on grc.com. Highly recommened if you want to know anything about denial of service attacks. Also worth the time to poke around the rest of this site.

More to come as I think of them.....
