ABSTRACT

Earlier this academic year, I volunteered to convert my Winter quarter course, Secure Database Systems, from a traditional classroom course to an online offering. Based on my initial experiences with the conversion, I decided to convert another traditional offering, Active Data Systems, to online, and jointly (with Carol Romanowski) proposed yet another course, Data Cleaning and Preparation, to be taught online; both of these courses will be offered online in Spring 20073. In this talk, I will present the motivation for online courses, describe current approaches used at RIT, and discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of offering online courses. An implicit goal of this talk is to generate a discussion of the role of online courses in the departmental portfolio of course offerings.
