Nero Wolfe Plot Synopses

Fer-de-Lance Nero Wolfe's first recorded case starts when Fred Durkin asks Wolfe to help his wife's friend, Maria Maffei, find her missing brother Carlo. This leads to Wolfe wagering the Westchester County District Attorney $10,000 that the death of Peter Oliver Barstow, a prominent university president, while playing golf was not due to a heart attack but murder.
The League of Frightened Men The League is a group of men bound together by complicity in the crippling of Paul Chapman in a hazing accident at Harvard 25 years earlier. When members of the group start dying mysteriously they seek help from Wolfe. Wolfe initially turns the case down, but two things revive his interest: his current financial state and the fact during a trial for writing an obscene book Chapman stated he wrote the book in order to talk about a murder he had committed.
The Rubber Band The pledge of the rubber band began in Silver City, Nevada, at the turn of the century.
