Canoeing on Mendon Ponds 12/3/99

Our latest outing was to Mendon Ponds. This was the 22nd consecutive month we've been canoeing in Rochester, NY.

Leaving the house in the morning. I thought the canoe looked pretty behind the Christmas lights.
We bought live minnows from this bait vending machine.

Ken is holding the bait.
Ready to launch!
Notice the "hard" water -- most of the pond had ice on it, up to a half inch thick.
We crunched our way through the ice to an open area in the middle of the pond.
Some of the geese were swimming, but most were sitting on the ice...
... until we got too close for comfort.
After giving up on the fishing part of the expedition, we went to the bird song trail.
These are chickadees, but we've also gotten nuthatches and titmice to eat from our hands.
