On Tuesday we started making better progress.
Mike, Matt, and "Chainsaw" Bob drilling the
countersink, pilot hole, and shank hole, respectively. Each log is attached
to the one below with three 12" lag bolts. One of the "tricks
of the trade" is to mark where the lag bolts are so you don't
hit them with the bolts from the next log (of course, we kept forgetting
to do this). A strip of foam and a bead of caulk go on each of the tongues
to keep out any drafts.

Dave brought us a load of black locust for floorboards,
but some of the boards were a little squirrelly. Here he is straightening
the edge of one of the wilder ones.
Dave is planing the edge of another wild floor plank.
The floor of this lean-to may well be the cleanest of any on the Trail
if only because whatever dirt that is tracked in will fall through the
numerous large cracks that still remain between the floor boards.
Margaret and Connie using traditional tools to attach
the floor. They quickly abandoned the traditional (slow) tools in favor
of modern (fast) tools. Forutnately we had about 6 drills in the group.
"Chainsaw" Bob is trimming the butt ends of the logs of the south wall with Ken's guidance. Now you get some idea of how Bob got his nickname! |
Ray is cutting the ragged ends of the floor boards flush... |
...and Ken rounds over the sharp edge. This makes it nicer
to sit in the lean-to with your legs hanging over the edge, which is what
everybody does.
