Our first objective was Blue Mountain, over 1500 feet above the parking lot. It was a gorgeous day, clear blue sky, bright sun, fresh new snow--about 5 degrees in the morning but no wind. The trail began with about 6 inches of snow, and the higher we climbed the deeper it got. The deepest drift we plowed through was about waist high.

A note about the topo maps: they were generated with Topo!, a fantastic program from National Geographic (www.topo.com). They have digitized the USGS topographic maps of all 50 states. The one we use is a bargain--$99 for all the topo maps of these eight Northeastern states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Ready to go! It's a gorgeous day with a temperature of 6 degrees.

Just starting on this pretty trail.

Ken on the way up.
Carol was enjoying the day!
Taking a breather. Facing the camera from L to R: Ken, Bruce, Gail, and Julia.
Dick is enjoying the hike!
The frost in the treetops against the deep blue sky was beautiful.
At the top! The firetower was covered in ice.
On the way down, you got to see the views that were behind you on the way up. This is probably Blue Mountain Lake that we're seeing through the trees.
Sunday we hiked Goodnow Mountain, about 1000 feet of elevation gain. It was cloudy, so it wasn't as pretty as the day before, but it also wasn't as cold when we started out.
Hiking in light snow with a pretty heavy overcast.
Goodnow Mountain is supposed to have a lot of very nice views. This is the best we got on our cloudy day.
Success!
