Computer Science for Transfers
Lab 1 - Introduction to UNIX and the Java Runtime Environment

Overview

The primary purpose of this lab is to acquaint you with the computer system you will be using, and to introduce you to the basic tools you will need to do your work.

Pre-Lab Activities

  1. Find out the four letter code for your major (e.g. Computer Science is VCSG).
  2. Bring a copy of your course schedule with you to lab.
  3. Review your Unix book and be sure to bring it with you to lab.

Objectives

  1. Register in the course database.
  2. Learn how to create directories and move around in the Unix file system.
  3. Learn how to use a browser to access web pages used for the course.
  4. Learn basic text editing using emacs.
  5. Work with simple objects.

  4. Java jar files
  5. Calculating the area of a die
  6. Calculating the area of a cylinder (optional activity)
  7. Introduction to Strings
