As I prepare to start my medical education, I feel that I would
be able to apply myself best if I choose to specialize in Primary
Care - knowing a little in each of the medical fields, and being
able to help in any of them, to some extent.
Family Medicine would seem to be the ultimate vantage point from
which I could treat people of all ages, and help them deal with
almost any type of condition. Pediatrics would be similar, with
the tradeoff being spending more time with kids (which would be
more fun), but not treating adults, vs. being able to treat everyone,
in addition to giving counseling, (which Family Practitioners often
offer).
At the same time, I plan to involve myself in other fields as well.
Drawing on my computer expertise, I hope to be able to find and
introduce novel ways of applying computers in medicine, particularly
PDAs, and perhaps tablet PCs, which I believe hold a lot of potential.
I plan to be involved in neurological research, continuing my Master's
Thesis work on Brain-Computer Interfaces. I plan to get expertise
in applying alternative medical techniques to help with various
conditions. I believe such techniques as hypnosis, accupressure,
biofeedback, and many others should have a place in patient treatment,
as long as they are used responsibly and with patient consent.
I believe it a privilege to be able to teach what I know to others.
Regardless of what I choose to specialize in, I will also be on
the lookout for opportunities to teach - whether a review class,
a college lab, a programming course, or just helping a friend -
teaching allows us to pass on our knowledge to others, and making
us a part of what people accomplish with that knowledge.
