Title: Parallel Animated Image File Generation
Defense Date: May 24, 2012
Abstract: Creating visualizations from data generated by scientific simulations can be an intense task with respect to use of computing resources and computing time. This is especially true in modern simulations which are increasingly computed using some flavor of parallel computing -- using remote clusters in national laboratories, GPUs or the like -- where visualization requires data to be transferred to a central resource before being processed. It would be beneficial to be able to create visualizations while the simulations are being computed so that additional processing is not required to revisit stored data. The creation of these visualizations itself needs to be quick and lightweight so as not to interfere with the simulation performance. This project aims at creating an API that would allow creation of movies (visualization) over a parallel architecture simultaneously with the simulation.
