This course continues the study of computer networks begun in 4003-420/4005-740 Data Communications and Networks I, emphasizing design principles and theoretical aspects of networks. Topics include the nature of communications media and signalling methods, analog and digital transmission; data link protocols, protocol proof techniques; routing, broadcasting, multicasting; connection, disconnection and crash recovery protocols; internetworking and security; and network analysis and design using graph theory and queueing theory.

• 4003-420 or 4005-740, Data Communications and Networks I
• Calculus
• Probability and Statistics
• Discrete Mathematics
• Java programming ability

• The student will be able to develop software for high performance networking applications.

• The student will be able to explain alternative network layer routing algorithms.

• The student will be able to analyze a network's traffic capacity and connectivity using graph theoretical techniques.

• The student will be able to analyze a network's delay characteristics using queuing theoretical techniques.

• The student will be able to explain transport layer packet loss recovery, flow control, and congestion control algorithms.

• The student will be able to explain the data signals used in modern local area networks, wide area networks, and wireless networks.
