This course is an introduction to the concepts and principles of computer networks. Students will design and implement projects using application protocols, and will study transport, network, and data link protocols and algorithms. The course also includes an introduction to local area networks, data transmission fundamentals, and network security. Programming projects will be required.

Prerequisite knowledge:

• Java programming, including threads and sockets
• Elementary probability theory

Prerequisite course chain:

• 1016-351, Probability and Statistics I
• 4003-334, Computer Science 4
• 4003-231, 4003-232, 4003-233, Computer Science 1-3 or equivalent

• The student will explain the layered protocol model used in designing networks.
  Evaluation: Exams
   
• The student will design and build network protocol software at the application layer.
  Evaluation: Team project and presentation, programming projects
   
• The student will explain the purpose and basic operational principles of the transport, network, data link, and physical layers.
  Evaluation: Exams
   
• The student will explain the protocols used at each layer of the Internet.
  Evaluation: Exams
   
• The student will explain issues of network security and approaches for achieving network security.
  Evaluation: Exams
   
• (Graduate students) The student will analyze the research literature in current areas of networking research.
  Evaluation: Team research investigation and presentation
